Foundation Training in Tayside Orthopaedics
Making the Most of It
What Will My Role Involve?
Initial Steps
We hope you’re excited to be working with us. Your role in the department will be variable based upon your stage, but most importantly, you’ll be heavily involved in the ward-based care of our patients. Prior to coming to work with us, we would recommend doing a little bit of reading on some basic orthopaedics, and make sure to keep in touch with your rota co-ordinator. OrthoBullets is an excellent website with lots of information, and otherwise McRae’s series of trauma and elective textbooks are valuable resources. We also recommend following this website’s updates and feel free to follow our Twitter page for some more information on what we’re up to.
Induction
During your first week in the department, we run an induction ‘bootcamp’ to quickly bring everyone up to speed as required. This is a great chance to get to know everyone, and also a time to ask any questions you might have about the job. We’re always keen to help, and although the focus is on ward-care for our patients, we hope you’ll also be able to learn more about orthopaedic surgery itself.
Teaching and Support
Whilst working in the department, you will get to know the registrars and consultants. We hope you’ll take the opportunity to carry out some quality improvement or research work with us. We also hope to be running regular, orthopaedic-themed teaching during your time with us. If you have an interest in trauma and orthopaedic surgery, please let us know, so we can help you get the experience and exposure you need.
